Stage One of Tooth Decay: White Spots
After many acid attacks, the first visible sign is a white spot within the enamel of the tooth. White spots will likely still be hard to the touch, but the first sign that a cavity may happen. If we catch a cavity in this stage, we can usually stop the progress through treatment options and prevent the cavity from developing any further. With heavy fluoride application, good oral hygiene and brushing and flossing techniques, the white spots have the potential to remineralize.
Stage Two of Tooth Decay : Enamel Invasion
If a white spot from stage one has the opportunity to progress further, it will start breaking down the enamel and the very beginning of a visible hole, or cavity, will start. If a cavity requires to be filled, this is the ideal stage to do it since it is not too big yet and totally contained within the enamel. The chance of success is higher.
Stage Three of Tooth Decay: Dentin Invasion
Once a cavity breaks down through the enamel it will reach the softer layer of the tooth called dentin. Due to the porous body of dentin, once a cavity reaches this stage it will spread very quickly and need treatment fast.
Stage Four of Tooth Decay: Pulp Invasion
Once the internal living tissues of the tooth, the pulp, becomes infected with the bacteria, you will develop an abscess at the tip of the tooth’s root. This is a very painful stage as the infection builds and spreads throughout the bone. You will likely see a pimple or bubble in your gum, near the tip of your tooth’s root where the infection is attempting to drain out.
Stage Five of Tooth Decay: Loss of Tooth Viability
Stage five means that the tooth has reached the stage of needing a root canal or extraction.
